City of Johannesburg Environmental Internships 2025

The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) invites South African unemployed graduates to apply for 18 months Environmental Internship Programme 2025.

The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) is offering an exciting 18-month internship opportunity in the Environmental and Infrastructure Service Department, specifically within the Waste Management and Regulation branch. This internship is aimed at qualifying students in the Johannesburg community who wish to gain valuable on-the-job exposure, enhance their academic qualifications, and acquire practical experience in the field of environmental management.

Internship Details:

  • Internship Duration: 18 months (not exceeding)
  • Remuneration:
    • R9,960.45 per month (Basic salary, no benefits)
  • Location: Traduna House, Braamfontein

Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 12 (NQF Level 4), plus a Degree in Environmental Health, Environmental Management, Environmental Science or closely related disciplines (NQF Level 7).
  • Residency: Only City of Joburg residents will be considered.
  • Eligibility: Applicants who have never participated in an internship programme before (unless the previous internship was unrelated to their course of study).

Primary Function:

The selected intern will be tasked with managing the process of developing and implementing waste management policies, strategies, and plans aimed at ensuring sustainable waste management services across the city. The goal is to help achieve the City’s strategic objectives for integrated waste management and oversee the planning and implementation of sustainable waste projects.

Key Learning Areas:

  • Waste Management Planning: Ensure compliance with relevant legislation and adopt sustainable waste management practices.
  • Stakeholder Management: Engage with communities to foster participation in waste management initiatives.
  • Project Coordination: Contribute to the planning, reporting, and financial management of waste management projects.
  • Risk Management: Monitor and report on risks, implementing mitigation measures where necessary.
  • Project Management: Oversee the entire project development cycle and ensure successful project execution.

Competencies:

  • ICT Literacy: Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Project Management: Experience or knowledge in managing projects from initiation to execution.

Core Competencies:

  • Understanding of environmental issues and relevant waste management legislation.
  • Proven experience in environmental capacity building and running waste management policies and projects.
  • Knowledge of environmental policy and the application of project principles.
