The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) is offering an exciting Internship opportunity for students residing within the Johannesburg community. The internship falls under the Transport Department, Infrastructure Development Branch, and is designed to provide qualifying students with valuable on-the-job exposure in the field of Civil Engineering.
This initiative forms part of CoJ’s commitment to youth development and aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical workplace experience. The programme will run for a maximum period of 18 months.
Internship Overview
Position: Internship: Infrastructure
Department: Transport – Infrastructure Development
Stipend: R10 109,86 per month (basic salary, no benefits)
Duration: Not exceeding 18 months
Reference: Circular 017/2025
Location: Old Mutual Building, 75 Helen Joseph Street, Johannesburg
Minimum Requirements
- Matric / Grade 12 (NQF Level 4)
- Degree in Civil Engineering (minimum 360 credits)
- An Honours Degree will be an added advantage
- Must be a resident of the City of Johannesburg
- Applicants must not have participated in any internship programme before
Primary Function
Assist in the implementation and monitoring of Transport Infrastructure projects. Interns will support the team in managing construction activities under the Transport Department and ensure alignment with the Transport Master Plan.
Key Learning Areas
- Assist with planning and consultation
- Support in financial management in line with the MFMA
- Compile and monitor monthly reports
- Participate in project performance monitoring and evaluation
Competencies Required
Leading Competencies:
- Microsoft Office skills: Word, Excel, PowerPoint
- Interpretation of building and civil construction drawings
- Communication and problem-solving skills
- Organisation and time management skills
Core Competencies:
- Civil Engineering design interpretation
- Analytical and numerical skills
- Ability to prioritise tasks and manage confidential information
