About the Trainee Programme
The Aviation Environmental Compliance Trainee Programme is designed to equip candidates with the skills and knowledge required to ensure that South Africa’s aviation sector operates in an environmentally responsible manner. As part of the Aviation Safety Infrastructure Division, the trainee will undergo extensive training to review Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), implement the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), and manage regulatory oversight in line with South African Civil Aviation Regulations (SACARs) and South African Civil Aviation Technical Standards (SACATS).
Key Responsibilities
1. Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs)
One of the primary tasks of the trainee will be to review EIAs and ensure they meet all necessary environmental standards. This involves evaluating the potential environmental effects of proposed aviation activities and ensuring compliance with South African regulations.
2. CORSIA Implementation
As an AEC Trainee, you will play a key role in implementing the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). This program, part of the global effort to combat climate change, requires trainees to monitor and assess aircraft emissions, contributing to the broader goal of reducing aviation’s carbon footprint.
3. Regulatory Oversight
The SACAA ensures that all South African aviation entities adhere to environmental protection standards. As a trainee, you will be involved in the regulatory oversight of SACARs and SACATS, particularly in the areas of aircraft emissions, noise pollution, and climate change mitigation.
4. Auditing and Compliance
You will assist in conducting AEP (Aviation Environmental Protection) audits of airports and assess their compliance with international environmental standards. This includes reviewing the environmental plans of aerodrome operators and airline operators to ensure they meet the required regulations.
5. Collaboration with Stakeholders
Environmental protection in aviation requires coordination across various sectors. The AEC Trainee will work closely with international organizations such as ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization), IATA (International Air Transport Association), and other national departments, including the Department of Transport and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment.
6. Training and Development
As part of your role, you will be responsible for facilitating training on environmental compliance, including topics related to CORSIA, emissions monitoring, and the implementation of environmental management practices at airports and for airlines.
7. Administrative Duties
The AEC Trainee will also be responsible for various administrative tasks related to the Aviation Environmental Protection programme. This includes maintaining AEP-related documentation, planning inspections, and ensuring that all records are up to date.
8. Policy Management and Development
You will assist in the development and implementation of environmental regulations related to aviation. This includes drafting proposals for new regulations and amendments to existing ones, particularly in relation to ICAO Annex 16 (Environmental Protection) standards.
9. Liaison and Consultation
The AEC Trainee will have the opportunity to engage with key stakeholders and participate in public consultations and discussions. This includes coordinating activities with scientific and technical bodies, as well as addressing public inquiries on environmental compliance matters.
Job Requirements
Education
- Minimum: National Diploma in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or a related qualification.
- Ideal: Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or a related field. Knowledge of the National Environmental Act and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) regulations will be an added advantage.
Experience
- Minimum: 1 year of experience in environmental compliance.
- Ideal: Experience in aviation environmental compliance is a strong advantage but not a requirement.
Skills and Competencies
- Knowledge of environmental regulations, particularly in the context of aviation, is beneficial.
- Ability to work effectively with multiple stakeholders, including governmental and international bodies.
