The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) invites applications from unemployed South African graduates for the Municipal Environmental Graduate Programme 2025, part of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). This 12-month internship aims to provide work experience and capacity support in environmental management within local municipalities across all nine provinces.

Internship Closing Date: 23 June 2025
Internship Location: Nationwide (420 posts across all provinces)
Monthly Stipend: R9,200
Contract Duration: 12 months

Internship Overview

This programme offers young graduates a unique opportunity to work directly within municipalities, assisting with environmental planning, policy integration, and sustainability efforts. Interns will support capacity-building, planning forums, awareness campaigns, and implementation of departmental programmes.


Minimum Requirements

To be considered, applicants must:

  • Hold a National Diploma in Environmental Management / Environmental Sciences or a related field.
  • Have knowledge of environmental legislation and local government processes.
  • Possess strong skills in:
    • Communication (verbal & written)
    • Computer literacy
    • Stakeholder coordination and facilitation
    • Environmental planning
  • valid driver’s licence is an advantage.

Key Duties

  • Provide environmental technical support to municipalities.
  • Assist in the integration of environmental priorities into local development plans (e.g., IDPs, DDM).
  • Participate in forums and structures supporting environmental governance.
  • Facilitate environmental awareness and education campaigns.
  • Monitor and evaluate the implementation of sector programmes and municipal environmental performance.
