🎯 What Does a Train Assistant Do?
You’ll support the Train Driver to ensure freight and cargo are delivered safely, on time, and without damage.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and inspect locomotives before departure
- Assist with brake tests and start-up procedures
- Perform coupling and uncoupling of wagons
- Carry out shunting operations in yards and sidings
- Monitor signals and track conditions during trips
- Assist during incidents and emergencies
- Complete train journals and admin duties
- Follow strict rail safety regulations
🎓 Minimum Requirements
Education:
- Grade 12 (Matric)
- Must have Mathematics and/or Physical Science
Basic Requirements:
- Must be 21 years or older
- Minimum height: 1.6m
- Physically fit (vision, hearing, mental fitness)
- Able to carry heavy objects
- Willing to work shifts
Assessments:
- Medical evaluations
- Psychomotor testing (Vienna Testing System)
