The Gauteng Department of Health invites young South Africans to apply for the Nelson Mandela Fidel Castro Medical Programme 2025, offering the opportunity to study Medicine in Cuba. This life-changing bursary is specifically aimed at students from disadvantaged communities in Gauteng.

What Is the Nelson Mandela Fidel Castro Medical Programme?
This programme is a collaboration between South Africa and Cuba, designed to provide underprivileged youth with full bursaries to study medicine abroad. It focuses on producing medical graduates committed to serving in under-resourced areas of the country.
Who Can Apply?
To qualify, applicants must:
- Be South African citizens permanently residing in Gauteng
- Have matriculated in Gauteng
- Be between 18–30 years of age by the application closing date
- NOT be enrolled at any higher education institution
- NOT have received any previous bursary funding
- Have achieved at least 50% (Level 4) in the following Matric subjects:
- Mathematics
- Physical Science
- Life Sciences / Biology
- English
Required Documents
Applicants must upload the following supporting documents:
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Certified copy of birth certificate
- Certified copies of ID (applicant & parents/guardians)
- Certified copy of Matric certificate and transcript
- Proof of income for parents/guardians (or sworn affidavits if unemployed)
- Proof of residence validated by Ward Councillor or Municipal bill
